Duggan, and the book easily evoked the caring small town nature of Crooked Valley There were also some nice moments involving Lacey reconnecting with her family If you removed the character of Quinn Solomon, this might be a 4 star story.Unfortunately, Quinn Solomon is the hero.Lacey returns to Crooked Valley after a failed marriage and losing her job She is one third owner of the ranch, but isn t sure she wants to stay there She s got the hots for Quinn Solomon, who runs the ranch, even though they tend to argue a lot She loves his daughter Amber Lacey has a lot of pain regarding the fact she had a hysterectomy and can t have children Quinn has a lot of pain over the fact his first wife Marie died two years ago.The dead first wife trope in romances is always problematic, and that s especially the case here Marie was perfect Quinn says so Lacey believes so Everybody else says so Nobody ever refutes this Quinn repeatedly states out loud or to himself that nobody could ever top Marie or replace her He never goes back on this Even when he says he loves Lacey, this is because she has brought happiness to his life again, not because she was meant to be his all along I was left feeling Lacey was just a nice consolation prize because she was a good cook and a good second mother to Amber. But beyond that, Quinn was just so detestable I really hated the f out of him Where do I even start Firstly, his initial animosity towards Lacey is his belief that she turns her nose up at ranch life, and he keeps harping on about this It s actually nothing like that Lacey never once intimates she thinks this way She s an accountant and has lived a certain way her whole life She s even quick to point out the charms of her home town It s actually Quinn who turns his nose up at anyone who doesn t like the ranch life. Then we have Quinn s propensity to be an out and out ass to Lacey She does nothing but try to be sympathetic and helpful to him, and he just treats her like shit Look at some of these exchanges Lacey There s nothing worse than knowing your child is in pain Quinn What would you know about it Classy Even though he doesn t know Lacey can t have kids, it s still a truly outstanding asshat thing to say to someone trying to be sympathetic.Lacey You couldn t have known Don t blame yourself Quinn I m sure as hell not going to blame her Amber, his daughter , if that s what you re getting at Of course she isn t, and Quinn would know this He s just being an asshat Like usual.Lacey Do you want some cake I could make you a cup of coffee, take it into the office.Quinn No, I damn well don t want any cake He s annoyed that Lacey is going to use her accounting skills totry and help the ranch cut costs and earn That s it That s all it takes for Quinn to justify being a complete dick to a woman who, I reiterate, HAS DONE NOTHING EXCEPT TRY TO HELP HIM.Lacey I don t want to turn things upside down at all What are you talking about I m trying to help Quinn Maybe you could help a little less I understand you re at loose ends and not working, but Amber and me We re not your little project We re not your surrogate family So stop trying so goddamned hard to be indispensable to us You re not Marie, so quit trying to be After saying this, he kisses her passionately Because telling a woman she ll never measure up to your dead first wife is so romantic It really made me sick If I were Lacey, I d be getting a restraining order, frankly But Lacey just seems to find all of this really hot and keeps coming back for.Lacey You and I are old souls, Quinn It s experience that s made us old, not years And I think we ve both had enough heartache for a lifetime Quinn You re comparing your divorce to Marie s death Of course, only Quinn can know true heartache and pain and devastation and butt hurt And while Lacey s statement wasn t all that eloquent, I think a normal person s response would likely be, Yeah, it s been tough Thanks Run for the hills, Lacey Nope Lacey Does this mean we re going to stop fighting now, Quinn It gets exhausting, treading on eggshells around you Which were my thoughts, exactly Quinn I d like to stop fighting You make it difficult Yes, really Lacey has done NOTHING except try to say things that are consolatory or sympathetic, but it s HER fault that they bicker But Lacey just seems to take it all in her stride, and the only reason for this I assume is because trying to get an insufferable man child to dig you is some sort of turn on I honestly can t figure out why anyone would bother Anyway, this leads to the sex and Quinn suddenly realising, Hey, she ll never be as good as Marie, but she cooks and cleans and my daughter digs her, so I ve probably got a good thing here Hey, even though I may love her, I m not betraying Marie, because nothing will ever replace her So Lacey, realising a relationship is possibly on the cards, fesses up about never being able to have children.Quinn s response is to buy her a puppy. Now, I m a HUGE dog lover, but buying a puppy as a gift for somebody else Big no no They re a huge responsibility and not one you just hoist on another person without asking them first This is why so many dog shelters struggle to keep up with the demand of unwanted pets It s a TERRIBLE thing to do, and only further consolidated how much I hated Quinn Sure, turns out Lacey loves having a dog, but it doesn t change the fact he did such an irresponsible thing in response to a admission from Lacey that she can t have kids. After questions from Quinn about why she can t do surrogacy or adoption, Lacey puts the kibosh on the relationship I could understand this Instead of going out and buying a fucking puppy for her, of all things and thinking Amber can come over whenever she likes to play with it, no less , he could have just said he loved her as she was Lacey understandably believes she may not live up to what Quinn wants or expects which he has made clear to her previously several times over , and figures things should end now.Except, of course, this all gets turned around on Lacey It s her fault she doesn t fight for Quinn Never mind that he never seems to fight for her He accepts the break up with a shrug and moves on And because this prick has somehow achieved some sort of sainthood in this town, everybody else tells Lacey how terrible she is for not fighting for Quinn She s always put her uterus before her man and how dare she do that So Lacey is the one who has to go and grovel to Quinn As expected, he acts like an asshat about it She goes to the barn so they can talk alone and then he makes her wait for several hours because he has work to do When they can finally talk Lacey I d spent a lot of energy fighting for what I wanted for years, and I lost And then when I had something to fight for again, I was too afraid to go after it Quinn And how did you come by this miraculous revelation After everything, after all the shitty things he has said to her, after making sure she knows she ll never top his dead first wife, she STILL has to beg to be with him As it turns out, during the black moment, he was just waiting for Lacey to come to her senses You know, never once fighting for HER It really pissed me off.I truly hated, hated, hated, hated, hated, hated Quinn It s hard to top the hero from Debra Webb s Reluctant Hero the one who held the heroine prisoner against her will , but Quinn Solomon comes pretty close A truly disgusting self satisfied man Yuck.I liked Lacey She was a well rounded character, and her relationships with the other characters in the book are what saved this from 1 star I have no idea why she fought so hard for a selfish dickhead like Quinn, but hopefully she s happy being that asshat s second choice 4 1 2 stars Lacy needs to start all over She never thought her life would come to this but she also never thought she would have the triple whammy lose her job, husband and dream all within months Now she is at ranch she and her brothers have inherited, unfortunately the ranch comes with the ranch manager Quinn who is less than impressed with her.Lacy got hurt badly by her ex husband, and I sort of wished her brothers could have had words with Carter I can understand the level of pain she 4 1 2 stars Lacy needs to start all over She never thought her life would come to this but she also never thought his daughter as well.By the title you would think this book completed by Valentine s Day, but that is not the case The holiday is special to the plot, but anyone can read this book anytime of the year It is an easy to read book, nothing that will keep you pondering plot points all night long It was a perfect read for me on a night where insomnia kept me awake It was a comfortable intimacy kept behind doors romance that had characters that peaked my interest I will definitely be looking for the book that went before this one and the one after.I received this book from the publisher via Valley is a ranch that she owns with her two brothers a ranch that Lacey wants no part in and has been pretty vocal since she found out about it The downside to moving in at the ranch temporarily, of course is running into Quinn, the ranch manager Quinn has been running the ranch for ten years and cannot believe how selfish Lacey is with wanting to sell the ranch, despite the fact that he, others and her oldest brother Duke depend on its livelihood But don t worry Quinn has no problem telling Lacey exactly how he feels And Lacey, well, she refuses to back down no matter how surly Quinn is to her.The two make arrangements to stay as far away from each other as possible That is, until a fire damages Quinn s house and he and his young daughter temporarily move onto the ranch with Lacey Living in close quarters ignites a spark that slowly builds into a blistering attraction Quinn is trying to keep his distance and trying to protect his daughter from getting attached to Lacey Lacey has plans to get a job and leave the ranch as fast as she can Quinn has already lost one woman he loves he can t and won t let himself and his daughter invest in another one who leaves Quinn simply can t afford the risk or can he Love, love, LOVE this story Quinn and Lacey are magic together, even when they are at each other s throats The secondary characters are also brilliant If you want a beautifully fragile yet heartwarming love story, you ve come to the right place Donna Alward is a fantastic storyteller I invite you all to check out any of her happily ever afters I was gifted an eBook copy from the publisher via Net Galley in exchange for an honest review All conclusions reached are my own I have still not kicked this addiction to cowboys I have tried, but I keep going back to the books on my kindle that have cowboy in the title It seemed only fitting that I got to this one before Valentine s Day passed me by I really liked the plot of this book As if I don t find broody cowboys endearing enough, making him a single dad is a sure fire way to get my emotional attention Quinn was my favorite character he s loyal, strong, determined, and always puts the need of his little girl I have still not kicked this addiction to cowboys I have tried, but I keep going back to the books on my kindle that have cowboy in the title It seemed only fitting that I got to this one Quinn was my favorite character he s loyal, strong, determined, and always puts the need of his little girl first Which leads me to his daughter, Amber, who is possibly the most adorable child that I ve ever read about in my life I really appreciated the way Alward wrote her, because it seemed genuine It didn t seem like an adult trying to find a child s voice, which is something I noticethan one would think And then there s Lacey I liked her well enough, and I ached for her and her back story An illness that prevents kids, a messy divorce, no job It s rough But towards the end I was really frustrated with her stubbornness to a point where I no longer found it endearing I enjoyed watching the relationship between Quinn and Lacey progress from two people who pretty much hate each other to somethingthan that There was a nice flow to the story, so it was well timed and easy to lose yourself in the story for a few chapters at a time There was drama and humor and sweet romance, and really whatdoes a girl need from her cowboy Harlequin, hm And if I haven t persuaded you yet this book features a cowboy holding a puppy This was a sweet romance that helped to scratch my cowboy itch, and I think fans of contemporary westerns, romance, cowboys, and Harlequin books will enjoy this one Thanks to Harlequin for my copy in exchange for my honest review. This review can also be found on my blog, Bitches n Prose HEART OF A COWBOY Coming home is hard enough without ranch manager Quinn Solomon making Lacey Duggan feel like an unwanted guest She s only here until she figures out what to do with her one third ownership of Crooked Valley But Quinn s irresistible daughter is giving Lacey ideas about being part of a family And though they don t even like each other, Lacey s having crazier notions about the widowed single dad Does Lacey think she can waltz in and turn Quinn s life upside down only to leave again The pretty accountant knows nothing about running a ranch, yet she s making the Montana homestead feel like a home Quinn isn t looking for love again Until a woman who s all heart and a determined little girl help one lovestruck cowboy see the light I picked this one up because I m a sucker for cowboy stories Harlequin s American Romances tend to focus on the importance of family and community They are usually fairly clean at least compared to most of the books Harlequin publishes and it had just been Valentine s Day so this title caught my eye.I ended up really enjoying The Cowboy s Valentine I didn t realize this was the 2nd book in a series but it worked as a stand alone as the 1st book was about Lacey s brother There was some back s I picked this one up because I m a sucker for cowboy stories Harlequin s American Romances tend to focus on the Netgalley.com From the minute Lacey met Amber, Quinn Solomon s daughter, I knew that she was not going to leave Crooked Valley Of course there was a journey she and Quinn had to make to get to their ranch she owned with her two brothers Quinn Solomon was the ranch manager and he was a single father with a four year old daughter Quinn came into his life when she returned home This is a wonderful love story There is a reason Lacey won t give her heart away and she thinks it will make Quinn leave her, too This is a great story like all of Donna Alward s are Read this one I really enjoyed this book It was sweet and romantic at times Loved that there was that dual point of view and the story line was interesting There was enough tension between characters and romance to keep the readers wantingOverall I really enjoyed this book. As I sat down to write my review of The Cowboy s Valentine by Donna Alward, I found myself going back to reread my review of Her Rancher Rescuer, which was the first Alward I read It seemed, in my head, that these two books had a lot of similarities, even tho the plots were very different When I read my review tho, I realized that they really had nothing in common, except that they FEEL the same Both sets of characters deal with real issues in a grownup way And they are both on a ranch So As I sat down to write my review of The Cowboy s Valentine by Donna Alward, I found myself going back to reread my review of Her Rancher Rescuer, which was the first Alward I read It seemed, in my head, that these two books had a lot of similarities, even tho the plots were very different When I read my review tho, I realized that they really had nothing in common, except that they FEEL the same Both sets of characters deal with real issues in a grownup way And they are both on a ranch So what s The Cowboy s Valentine about Coming home is hard enough without ranch manager Quinn Solomon making Lacey Duggan feel like an unwanted guest She s only here until she figures out what to do with her one third ownership of Crooked Valley But Quinn s irresistible daughter is giving Lacey ideas about being part of a family And though they don t even like each other, Lacey s having crazier notions about the widowed single dad Does Lacey think she can waltz in and turn Quinn s life upside down only to leave again The pretty accountant knows nothing about running a ranch, yet she s making the Montana homestead feel like a home Quinn isn t looking for love again Until a woman who s all heart and a determined little girl help one lovestruck cowboy see the light.Lacey has recently returned to the ranch that she now owns 1 3 of with her brothers She s lost her husband, her job and her home, and she s slightly mortified to be coming home to a ranch she doesn t even want She s planning to lick her wounds for a few days, spruce up her resume, and get back to her life She s not counting on sharing the house with Quinn, the ranch manager Quinn has his own struggles, he s the single father to a 4 year old girl and he s desperately trying to keep their live as stable and predictable as possible He had a great relationship with his dead wife while she was alive and is reluctant to let that go He and Lacey spar constantly, and fight their obvious attraction.Of course, this being a romance novel, things eventually explode in a very realistic way The two are unable to keep their hands off each other, but like adults sit down to talk out what should happen next Surprisingly, Quinn is starting to realize that while he misses Maria, and he does mourn her, it sof a comfortable habit than a deep pain He s shocked to discover that he doesn t have to mourn her, he can choose to fall in love with another woman Unfortunately for him, Lacey feels that her secret, and the reason for the end of her marriage, is too great a burden to share with Quinn and attempts to walk away Outwardly she insists that she s trying to save Quinn from heartache, but Quinn is able to recognize that she s scared inside And here s where the story gets great, Quinn doesn t storm off or write her off He backs off a bit and waits Wait what That never happens in a romance novel Usually the spurned half goes off to lick wounds and we need a big grovel scene to make up for it That doesn t happen at all here The reader still gets a satisfying resolution reunion but no one s pride gets injured I admit it, I cried.Alward s Harlequins have a way of tackling serious, believable issues in a adult way I thought she handled Lacey s emotions around her secret sorry, spoilers very well I could clearly see why Lacey would feel like she did I could really see how grief could become a habit I really enjoy this aspect of her books. Were there any problems with the book or was this perfect Of course there were problems, but they were minor There was the problem with Quinn s wedding ring, which is in the way until it s never mentioned again, and the last sentence of chapter 13 threw me so far out of the story that I had to stop reading in the middle of an emotional part It felt so out of character and out of place and such a stupid stereotype that that ONE sentence is the most memorable one in the entire book I also firmly believed that Quinn would react in a completely different way to Lacey s secret a much much worse, but I think plausible, way I was so happy that he didn t, because it would have changed my opinion of Quinn as a reasonable person Final verdict, not 5 stars, but still very very close. The Cowboy s Valentine was published on February 3rd
